My life has always been about singing and entertainment.
Beginning at the age of six I developed
both vocal and stage skills as a singer and entertainer on the TV program
The Howdy Doody Hour
in New York City. The show was one of TV s first and longest-running
children s entertainment
series. I was also a regular on two other children s shows: Happy s
Party out of Pittsburgh PA
and Giant Tiger out of Cleveland OH.
My high school and college years were spent studying vocal performance.
During high school, at
the age of 14, I was given a scholarship to the Cleveland Institute of
Music. During college, while
pursuing my BFA from Carnegie Mellon, I was awarded three Carnegie Awards:
two in Voice and
one in Piano for Outstanding Performance in a Competition . Upon
graduation I was awarded a
Teaching Fellowship towards my Master s Degree and in the early 70 s was
listed in the Outstanding
Young Women of America publication (listed under Judy Zabetakis). From
the late 70 s to the early
80 s I immersed myself in the pure form of the Belcanto Technique
methodology in Germany. It was
at this time my concert career in Germany, Austria and Spain flourished.
It is this pure form of the
Belcanto Technique that is the basis of my teaching, as the voice building
aspect of it significantly
increases range within weeks and heals abused voices.
As a teacher for over 38 years, my students have performed all over the
world as solo artists or
band members in dance clubs, cabaret clubs, radio stations, TV and musical
theatre. Currently
one of my students, Bridget Barkan, is touring with the Scissor Sisters.
Two other students who
have granted me the rights to mention them are: Q-Tip and Dan McBride of
Thirteen Hands.
Q-Tip was a member of the critically acclaimed group, A Tribe Called
Quest , and is more recently
involved in solo work as well as with his jazz-influenced hip hop group.
Dan McBride was chosen
for the ballot by The National Academy of Recording Artists for the 2006
Grammy Awards for
both Best Male Pop Performance and Best Instrumental Arrangement
Accompanying Vocalist .
My lessons and classes are granted accreditation by New York University s
Gallatin School of

Often classical singers are held back from reaching their true potential. Many singers study, practice
and have their techniques progress to a certain extent, only to hit a plateau and not be able to improve
any further. Other singers work hard to gain a good technique, but are then told that their voices lack
the necessary polish for a professional career. Larger-voiced singers often have difficulty finding
teachers to help them open their voices completely. Some singers audition sucessfully and start
performance careers, but develop vocal problems and consequently feel insecure about their techniques.
These situations are all extremely frustrating, forcing singers to go from studio to studio in search of
a teacher with an answer.
There are several crucial ways in which the vocal folds have to function in order to reach the highest
level of professional sound possible for each unique voice. They are utilizing the thin edge function of
the vocal folds, correct nasal resonance (or ring) through the small "ng" thread, and the correct
approximation of the vocal folds through gentle cord closure. These need to be integrated into the
technique while having a relaxed, lowered larynx, an open oro-pharngeal space and appropriate low-body
support. The vast majority of teachers do not address these functions, because they are either not aware
of them or they lack the right tools. However, these functions are absolutely necessary for a healthy
technique and for singers to be able to reach their maximum potential.
I address these functions very directly with students using specific exercises inherited from great
pedagogues of the past like Manuel Garcia II, Dr. Gillis Brat, Alan Lindquest, William Vennard and my own
voice teacher, the magnificent David Jones. I guide singers to use the exercises correctly to develop
these healthy functions in their own voices, as well as all of the other necessary functions like
abdominal, lumbar and sternal support (apoggio), throat expansion, high, relaxed soft palate and
oro-pharngeal expansion, a free tongue and jaw, and rounded vowels. The results are often remarkable.
My students experience greater freedom, ease of production, resonance, focus, chiaroscuro (light-dark
coloration), natural vibrato, flexibility, spin and beauty of tone.
These functions are of the utmost importance for classical singers, but are also very necessary for
musical theatre, jazz and pop singers. The Swedish-Italian Technique can easily be applied to any
musical genre. In these competitive times, everyone needs to find an edge. Having an optimal vocal
technique can provide that edge. Such a healthy technique allows for more ease of production, vocal
stamina, resonance and a consistent, blended sound that matches throughout the range.
A singer's instrument is not only the voice, but also the body. Singers alone as musicians have no
external instrument, making how singers use their bodies even more critical. As a certified Alexander
Technique teacher, I understand how the body works mechanically as a whole and how the parts affect each
other. With hands-on input, I am able to give my students the direct experience of spending less effort
when singing, allowing for more ease and openness in the body and thereby improving the quality of the
sound. Over time, this ease becomes gradually incorporated into the singers' good habits for singing.
Some singers prefer a fast track and take supplimentary private Alexander Technique lessons, in addition
to voice lessons. I currently offer these in my studio in Bloomfield, NJ. In a lesson, I offer the
student a new experience of freedom and openness in the body through hands-on input. Most students feel
a radical difference in their bodies before and after a lesson. After enough experience, these positive
changes can then be induced by the student whenever needed in daily life, including while singing.

encouraging, safe place to explore your voice's potential and build both
audition and performance repertoire. I use a variety of exercises to
develop breath support, an efficient, healthy projection, expand vocal
range and even out the break.
I worked for many years as a Musical Theater performer (3 different
European companies of CATS, Off-Broadway in Prom Queens Unchained and
Little Johnny Jones, Regionally in Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, Annie, etc) before
becoming an Opera and Concert singer (Operatic world-premiere with Czech
State Orchestra in Vienna, Messiah Soloist with Ensamble America Chamber
Orchestra for New Jersey Music Society, Jenny in Three Penny Opera with
conductor Anton Coppola, Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana with Riverside
Opera, Fiordiligi in Cosí fan tutte with South Shore Symphony, Solo
Recital for Trinity Church at Wall Street), so I understand the needs of
the Broadway-bound Triple Threat as well as of the classical singer.

and also at the International Theater Festival in Italy. I am currently
completing my graduate degree in Drama Therapy at NYU, and my one woman
show, IF ONLY, premiers in NYC this October before easter US tour. I
maintain a voice and drama studio of 35 + students in Ohio which travel as
a core performing troupe of students ages 10-19. I specialize in popular
Broadway vocal styles including the Joan Lader Technique, endurance
training and proper belt technique. I also teach classical and pop singers
