My life has always been about singing and entertainment.
Beginning at the age of six I developed
both vocal and stage skills as a singer and entertainer on the TV program
The Howdy Doody Hour
in New York City. The show was one of TV s first and longest-running
children s entertainment
series. I was also a regular on two other children s shows: Happy s
Party out of Pittsburgh PA
and Giant Tiger out of Cleveland OH.
My high school and college years were spent studying vocal performance.
During high school, at
the age of 14, I was given a scholarship to the Cleveland Institute of
Music. During college, while
pursuing my BFA from Carnegie Mellon, I was awarded three Carnegie Awards:
two in Voice and
one in Piano for Outstanding Performance in a Competition . Upon
graduation I was awarded a
Teaching Fellowship towards my Master s Degree and in the early 70 s was
listed in the Outstanding
Young Women of America publication (listed under Judy Zabetakis). From
the late 70 s to the early
80 s I immersed myself in the pure form of the Belcanto Technique
methodology in Germany. It was
at this time my concert career in Germany, Austria and Spain flourished.
It is this pure form of the
Belcanto Technique that is the basis of my teaching, as the voice building
aspect of it significantly
increases range within weeks and heals abused voices.
As a teacher for over 38 years, my students have performed all over the
world as solo artists or
band members in dance clubs, cabaret clubs, radio stations, TV and musical
theatre. Currently
one of my students, Bridget Barkan, is touring with the Scissor Sisters.
Two other students who
have granted me the rights to mention them are: Q-Tip and Dan McBride of
Thirteen Hands.
Q-Tip was a member of the critically acclaimed group, A Tribe Called
Quest , and is more recently
involved in solo work as well as with his jazz-influenced hip hop group.
Dan McBride was chosen
for the ballot by The National Academy of Recording Artists for the 2006
Grammy Awards for
both Best Male Pop Performance and Best Instrumental Arrangement
Accompanying Vocalist .
My lessons and classes are granted accreditation by New York University s
Gallatin School of
Individualized Study . If you have interest in this feature, please
advise me during our initial
phone conversation.
The following styles are taught: R&B, Pop, Jazz, Rock, Metal, Hip Hop,
Standards, Broadway and
Alternative.
Please visit my website at http://www.judyhages.com for additional
information.
Please respond via e-mail or to phone number: 201-391-1922. All calls
will be returned on the
weekend, or sooner if possible. Thank you.

I am a classically-trained dramatic soprano, voice teacher and a certified teacher of
the Alexander Technique with a passion for helping singers discover their true voices! My teaching is
based on the Swedish-Italian Technique and I provide a supportive, positive atmosphere that allows you to
learn a healthy technique, develop your voice to its maximum potential and reach your desired goals. I
have teaching studios both in New York, NY (Manhattan) and Bloomfield, NJ.
Often classical singers are held back from reaching their true potential. Many singers study, practice
and have their techniques progress to a certain extent, only to hit a plateau and not be able to improve
any further. Other singers work hard to gain a good technique, but are then told that their voices lack
the necessary polish for a professional career. Larger-voiced singers often have difficulty finding
teachers to help them open their voices completely. Some singers audition sucessfully and start
performance careers, but develop vocal problems and consequently feel insecure about their techniques.
These situations are all extremely frustrating, forcing singers to go from studio to studio in search of
a teacher with an answer.
There are several crucial ways in which the vocal folds have to function in order to reach the highest
level of professional sound possible for each unique voice. They are utilizing the thin edge function of
the vocal folds, correct nasal resonance (or ring) through the small "ng" thread, and the correct
approximation of the vocal folds through gentle cord closure. These need to be integrated into the
technique while having a relaxed, lowered larynx, an open oro-pharngeal space and appropriate low-body
support. The vast majority of teachers do not address these functions, because they are either not aware
of them or they lack the right tools. However, these functions are absolutely necessary for a healthy
technique and for singers to be able to reach their maximum potential.
I address these functions very directly with students using specific exercises inherited from great
pedagogues of the past like Manuel Garcia II, Dr. Gillis Brat, Alan Lindquest, William Vennard and my own
voice teacher, the magnificent David Jones. I guide singers to use the exercises correctly to develop
these healthy functions in their own voices, as well as all of the other necessary functions like
abdominal, lumbar and sternal support (apoggio), throat expansion, high, relaxed soft palate and
oro-pharngeal expansion, a free tongue and jaw, and rounded vowels. The results are often remarkable.
My students experience greater freedom, ease of production, resonance, focus, chiaroscuro (light-dark
coloration), natural vibrato, flexibility, spin and beauty of tone.
These functions are of the utmost importance for classical singers, but are also very necessary for
musical theatre, jazz and pop singers. The Swedish-Italian Technique can easily be applied to any
musical genre. In these competitive times, everyone needs to find an edge. Having an optimal vocal
technique can provide that edge. Such a healthy technique allows for more ease of production, vocal
stamina, resonance and a consistent, blended sound that matches throughout the range.
A singer's instrument is not only the voice, but also the body. Singers alone as musicians have no
external instrument, making how singers use their bodies even more critical. As a certified Alexander
Technique teacher, I understand how the body works mechanically as a whole and how the parts affect each
other. With hands-on input, I am able to give my students the direct experience of spending less effort
when singing, allowing for more ease and openness in the body and thereby improving the quality of the
sound. Over time, this ease becomes gradually incorporated into the singers' good habits for singing.
Some singers prefer a fast track and take supplimentary private Alexander Technique lessons, in addition
to voice lessons. I currently offer these in my studio in Bloomfield, NJ. In a lesson, I offer the
student a new experience of freedom and openness in the body through hands-on input. Most students feel
a radical difference in their bodies before and after a lesson. After enough experience, these positive
changes can then be induced by the student whenever needed in daily life, including while singing.
I currently have openings in both my New Jersey and New York City studios. Please contact me at
aliciabriceland@hotmail.com or at 917 702-6657 to discuss your vocal journey and set up a first lesson!

Responsibilities: I have educated over two thousand
clients and my intention is to inspire and motivate people of all ages to
appreciate a broad range of musical styles. My mastery is to take a
potential singing voice and develop this musical instrument so it can
learn how to be used. I created and implemented a plan for teaching and
coaching beginner, intermediate and advanced students. I educate students
on vocal production, ear training, and sight-reading. We build a
repertoire of songs with each individual.
These techniques are based on a series of proven methods and that were
developed from decades of teaching experience for different levels. My
creativity has helped many people by giving them the confidence to enjoy
both the process of originating and sharing their self expression.

Do you want to learn how to sing? Shouldn't you take
lessons from someone who has actually perfomed for a living? I teach
singing with a natural approach to clearly presenting text and maximizing
your potential in a healthy way that will allow you to sing for years. I
love giving voice lessons and, honestly, every student I have ever had has
come back for more. I teach natural, breath-based technique that varies
according to your strengths and goals; in my experience I have learned
that not every vocalize works for everyone and therefore we create
exercises tailored to you. My training is classical (Eastman School of
Music Bachelor's and Performer's Certificates in Voice and Opera);
however, I bring this classical approach to Broadway and all types of
singing with the emphasis on projecting the text and singing clearly. I
sang for seven seasons as a baritone soloist at the MET, 14 at New York
City Opera, all over Europe, in South America, Japan, Hong Kong, etc.. I
have been fortunate to work with some of the finest singers, conductors
and stage directors in the world and I offer a no - nonsense approach to
singing based on breath and relaxation. I have a wide variety of
students:currently, I have one voice teacher (tenor), one cantor at a
synagogue on Long Island, 4 young professionals (also tenors) three
professional choral singers (baritones), two college gals (B'way and
classically inclined), and a whole bunch of high school gals from Long
Island!
I am available during the day and evening (and Saturdays) , teach at home
(no studio scheduling hassles!) on the same block as the 2 and 3 subway
stop, and would love the opportunity to meet you and work with you.
Oh - I don't charge an arm and a leg ( I made my money singing - I teach
because I love it!); I have a sliding scale (depending on your situation,
goals, and resources).

If one is looking for a voice teacher, what does one
look for? Well, how about a teacher that has maintained a forty year
career singing on the world's great stages. How about that teacher singing
bass, heldon-baritone and baritone roles for the last twenty-five years,
and still singing beautifully. Make no mistake, a mocicum of talent is
certainly needed, but to sing three repertoires for twenty-five years
requires a quality vocal technique. For thirty years I have been sitting
at the piano teaching voice. That's thirty years developing a methodology
that is has produced a long healthy career singing three repertoires. I
made my European debut as a bass, my Metropolitan Opera debut and winning
the Richard Tucker Award as a bass. In 1997-1999 I sang my first Wotans
and in 1996 made my debut at the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden in the
role of Scarpia. A mediocre teacher perhaps might do some singing, a good
teacher may even establish themselves in a decent career, however, singing
three repertoires on the greatest stages in the world is proof positive
that the vocal student in search of teacher certainly has positive
direction in working with an accomplished artist. If I had to weigh my
successes over the last thirty years between my guys and my girls, the
scale would surely tip in favor of my girls. Come, study with the best.

I am a pop and jazz singer by profession, with many
years of training under my belt. The work of utilizing strict vowels and
breath support has given me a wealth of technique, and the ability to sing
anything I want. I teach a modified bel-canto method, which develops the
entire voice; chest, middle (mix) and head, and focuses on vowels and
breath support. My students come from pop, rock, jazz and musical theatre
backgrounds and benefit tremendously from this work. I am well versed in
Meisner training, which assists the singer in becoming more personally
related to the text. I break down lyrics with my students to focus on
objective, actions and emotional expression.

I give my students a solid technical foundation and they soon
realize that their vocal potential is greater then they thought, and they are able to
sing music that they could not sing before. My students are able to see results
within the first three lessons. As an experienced teacher, I have always suggested
to my students, that through the comprehensive private vocal training with me, they
will discover their own voice type and be able to use their voices to express the
style of music that they love and that they feel vocally comfortable doing it. A very
important part of the lesson time is also given to thorough musical preperation for
auditions and performances, dramatic interpretation of the music, diction and
language skills, and the understanding and the use of the unification of the voice,
mind, and body. I have successfully taught injured voices, and I have taught all
voice types, beginners to professionals from age 12 on. I believe that if a stud
ent has one particular problem that is keeping the voice from functioning in a
healthy and efficient manner such as, bad breathe management in singing or how to
sing dramatically without pushing, this problem should be addressed in the lesson
immediately. My students never leave my studio vocally strained, vocally tired,
stressed or physcologically defeated and I guarantee that there will be a
significant improvement in a student's understanding of singing immediately. Musical
Styles Taught: Classical, Musical Theatre, Pop, Rock, Other.
My studio is located near Lincoln Center and is convenient to all
means of transportation.

I teach basic voice production to people who want to do all types of singing. I give you a good foundation for healthy, long term singing skills. I myself sing opera. I take students who have never sung a note to those that sing opera . I have even taught a few who thought they were tone deaf....but really weren't - just didn't know how to coordinate hearing and phonation. |

"Quite-literally the top vocal studio in New York, WVS
boasts an amazing 55+ percent of Broadway's current contracted performers
on its roster as well as the only 100-percent success rate of any
institution."
Whether you are a beginning singer or an emerging professional, the need
to perfect your instrument is invaluable. The key element in this process
is, of course, selecting a mentor to train and correctly mold your voice.
Who you chose as this instructor is in many ways the most important
decision you will make. The vocal technique you learn can quite literally
make or break your chances as a professional or even a casual singer. The
world's top vocal technicians, in fact, spend more time correcting other
pedagogues? mistakes than developing original principles.

Now accepting new students. I do not promise you can sing in just 10 lessons. You will learn the fundamental foundation of
singing. Most importantly you will be given the tools to actively assess
your singing. My most important job is to teach you to teach yourself and
make sure that when you are out of the studio, the remaining 167 hours a
week, you are able to make educated decisions about your singing. Each
lesson begins with breathing exercises followed by an extensive warm up
and singing. Classical, Musical Theater Legit and Belt welcome.

The philosophy of my teaching is based on the music
that you want to specialize or to learn.I do start from the music. From the
music phrasing ,you know where to breath .From the music you know what
kind of voice thymbre to use.
Other important aspects:
a)Enlarging your voice range without forcing your voice.
b)Pitch control without use of too much vibrato
c)Clarity in the fast passage
d)Volume of your voice according to the dimensions of the Concert Hall or
Opera House.
d)Perfect diction without compromising the projection

I believe that the key to strong, emotionally connected
performances come from a comfort in a performer's voice technique/s AND
consistent interpretation studies. I am unique in that I am a qualified
voice teacher and coach, and depending on your needs, I can develop a work
plan exactly for you. I believe strongly in acting for the singer and have
come into my own comfort zones through continual studies on my end as
well. I am an AEA performer, the winner of the National Soloist Award in
Boston in 97', and I have studied with Broadway music director Jeffrey
Saver, voice teacher Marianne Challis and more! I have trained at the Met
and also at the International Theater Festival in Italy. I am currently
completing my graduate degree in Drama Therapy at NYU, and my one woman
show, IF ONLY, premiers in NYC this October before easter US tour. I
maintain a voice and drama studio of 35 + students in Ohio which travel as
a core performing troupe of students ages 10-19. I specialize in popular
Broadway vocal styles including the Joan Lader Technique, endurance
training and proper belt technique. I also teach classical and pop singers
as well. Affordable rates, and guaranteed success! I believe all
performers should be able to afford to continue studying.
