They straightened a deviated septum and cleared a blocked turbinate. My voice opened up like a spring flower! Coloratura became easier, the full overtone series is now ringing again! (meaning, before I got punched in the nose in karate class).
My experience was not successful. I couldn't ( and still can't ) breathe 'naturally' through my nose. I was diagnosed as having rhinitis caused by a deviated septum. I had the surgery but my rhinitis lingered.
I went to see another doctor. He had me breathe out many times into a tube connected to a laptop, where a Dannish or Finnish software would draw the topography of my nose. According to him, the passage on one side was thinner than on the other one because one of my nostrils would 'give in' when I inhaled. I had a plastic surgery to put some kind of 'supporting flap' to keep both of my nostrils wide open while inhaling. That was about 8 months ago. Result: I still have a swollen nose and can't breathe well through it.
After the surgeries ( of course ), the doctors admitted my rhinitis wouldn't actually be solved by them, so both said ( at different times): You should look for alternative methods, like homeopathy. São Paulo is a very polluted city and has sudden temperature changes. You're allergic to environmental abroupt changes ( which is true ) .
Eventually, I read an article in a newspaper and decided to look for an orthodontist, who said I should start using a German mouth guard named Bionator, which will supposedly ( I don't believe anything anymore ) force me to breathe through my nose and then, as a consequence, the air in the sinus cavities will be recycled all the time so as not to accumulate microorganisms and dust there, what will stop my rhinitis. I liked the theory, but am still to see the results. I've decided to look for a homeopathist too, although I don't really believe it makes any sense ( but I believe acupuncture does ).
Well.... if I were you, I would try alternative methods first before trying a surgery which is controversial: some people have a great result ( like Suki and a friend of mine ), while others... Homeopathy can do no harm, so I think it may be a better start.
