I did have fun in a lesson with a 15-year-old singer, though, several years ago, experimenting with non-technical ideas. I had said that what we were trying to do with a particular placement exercise was to make the tone slightly less "acidic", to take the "vinegar" out of it, and she responded well to this idea, using her imagination to help her in the sound we wanted. Of course we then went through the process of investigating what she had done, what felt different, etc. We spent the rest of the lesson investigating other colours in her voice by considering food! She sang mashed potato, beefy, syrup, champagne - I hope she was guessing that last one - and she discovered a whole variety of colour which she had not realised her voice was capable of.
I hasten to add, this is not the way I normally teach!
