I belong to several listservs. Every list has a climate. Months ago, I used to consider Vocalist as "nice one." I saw Vocalist as a list list where the people on it mentored, encouraged, tolerated or respected, even cared about others on the list. I found the tone to be friendly, open, and polite.
I also belong to Opera-L. Now Opera-L takes itself more seriously. Historically, the tone of Opera-L is much more academic and erudite, but sharper. The brash, New York attitude (it is housed as CUNY) is ever present. There are individuals on that list who are expert, and I mean expert, at tearing apart individuals with whom they disagree. If one wanted to witness a good fight, this was a good list to be on.
The scary thing is that recently Opera-L ,on the surface perhaps, seems to be more caring and tolerant (at least in regards of a particular individual) while Vocalist is becoming less so. Now I do love a stimulating debate, for it can clarify one's thinking. However, I think we are losing a politeness (for lack of a better word) that was really quite special.
