I must have missed something in this thread. In phonics /u/ fool, tool -
is taught as the 'long u'. /U/ book, cook - is taught as 'short u'. I
can't imagine someone insisting that /u/ is short. BTW, the upside-down V
is the sound of "u" in "jump" rather than the "oo" in "foot"/fUt/.

but we sustain the "fool" vowel in spoken English. I am forever telling
Asian English students to prolong certain vowel sounds which they have a
tendency to clip short, thus making their English less understandable. That
[u] is
one of them.
