thank you for confirming my spelling of palate (my mother being an
artist, i have always had the tendency to spell it pallette).
however, i suspect that the palate is rarely half way closed. if you
can, try putting a finger on your palate and hum. i was surprised at how
down mine was.
it is the vocal folds, not the palate, that regulates the amount of air
used. although, i suspect the palate's position can have a 'feel' influence
on how one uses one's air.
