when you hum the mouth is closed. if the mouth is closed and you are humming (regardless of the type of humming you are doing. we may have to start a seperate list for that), the air has to go somewhere. out the nose is the only option for most of us. that means the palate (does that spelling look right?) has to be down, as it is the only back door to the nose.
certain styles of singing involve a low palate. that would explain why someone would want it down. whatever style you sing, it is down for 'm' and 'n'.
