Hi JC, I experience this from time to time also. It usually happens when I stop thinking about the vowel, or my breath becomes lazy. Basically, I think it stems from a lack of focus on the quality of sound, which translates into upper abdominal muscles being relaxed that should be engaged, and also maybe some neck, jaw, throat tension.
I think the sound itself comes from some tissues being in the way. For me, it definitely is not spit, or phlegm on the cords.
Have a wonderful day!

Presented in a non technical way...:) What is it called when there is an extra sound ? My voice is normally crystal clear and ringy ,especially in my upper register. Sometimes however, there is a slightly detectable static sound or hiss...Anyone know what this is?
