Margaret:
Your post provided lots of wonderful advice. The only thing that I'd like to add is that the search for "perfection" all too often leads to rigidity and usually results in a BORING performance.
Some more useful (and realistic) goals for singers would include being exciting, dramatic, imaginative, wild, demure, carefree, reckless, inventive, beautiful, seductive, intense, threatening, compelling, hypnotic, enthralling, angelic, demonic, childlike, courageous, regal, romantic, effervescent, despairing, thrilling, mournful, defiant, vain, sweet, exultant...and so on! Create an emotion and/or personality that characterizes the music, and you will have something much better than mere "perfection."
In my experience, when I concentrate on conveying the meaning of the music and providing a dramatic experience for my audience, my technique pretty much falls into place.
