One thing I've also noticed when listening to a lot of Italian singers is that they don't slavishly adhere to the "open" vs. "closed" vowel rules when the music demands otherwise. Usually in the upper register, all vowels tend to be sung open. They might *think* closed, but they definitely sing open for obvious reasons.
