Each to his own. I always loved Robert Preston's performance, and have never seen anybody equal him. Perhaps, if you're younger than I am, you have a hard time getting his homosexual "Victor Victoria" character out of your mind. I can relate to that, because I saw a community theater production of this show in which everything was great except the guy playing the Music Man was so obviously gay it was obnoxious to watch the love scenes!
I like Matthew Broderick very much, but I think he as totally miscast. He has much too sweet and mild-mannered a persona to be believable for me as a brash, fast-talking salesman. His "Trouble" was painful to watch - he looked like he felt embarrassed to be doing it. Not that I can think of anyone else they'd cast. The guy in the Broadway revival is not enough of a "star" to be cast, neither is someone else who'd probably do well in the role, Tom Wopat (ex-Duke of Hazzard but that was way too long ago), who did great in the Broadway Annie Get Your Gun revival and, unlike all his castmates, didn't need microphones to be heard in the theater.
I'm convinced that Kristin Chenowith is the daughter that Barbara Cook (the original Marian and Cunegonde) never had! I'm bummed I won't be able to see her when she sings with the National Symphony Orchestra in a pops concert this month!
