Deanna, Yes, endoscopy is the camera. I became involved with the voice therapy
department at the hospital because I have my primary licensure in the Estill
Voice Training System and all the SLPs at Greater Baltimore Medical Center and
Johns Hopkins Hospital are studying the system for use with their clients. I
help them a bit. We use spectrogram software to analyze what the voice is doing.
Many university voice departments are adding voice labs to their departments. I
am an independent teacher so I can only afford shareware while the universities
use Kay Elemetrics Computerized Speech Lab which is about $6000.00.

Hi Anne,
Thanks for the suggestion about having an ENT look, I did go in June and
they looked with that scope where a video is taken and I actually saw my
vocal folds in action. Would that be endoscopy or largynscopy? The dr.
said he didn't see signs of acid reflux but he put me on some kind of
medication for it anyway to see if there was a difference, and the
medicine made no difference. I thought the problem was due to allergies
too, but the ENT said that my swelling had nothing to do with allergies,
and that the problem he had in diagnosing anything was that many things
could be the cause of the swelling... I didn't have anything obvious
like nodules.
Someone else suggested speech therapy, I'm considering this option and
have actually taken 6 weeks of lessons with a voice teacher who
specializes also in helping with speech, so I've been practicing the
exercises he's given me. I need to find someone closer to my location
however, so I'm on hold with that idea for the moment.
Melinda's suggestion about not singing during lessons is something I've
actually tried tonight. It's really hard to do! She's right, students
do take on more of the responsibility if I'm not singing everything
right at them.. I wasn't able to make through the whole evening of
lessons without singing at all, but I did sing far far less than usual.
I'll try again tomorrow.
Thanks everyone!
Deanna
