Another thought in this regard: I have found that it was much easier to tap into emotion when sing COMIC rather than serious songs. Instead of trying to find really sad, angry, or even happy (but not funny) songs, you may want to start with FUNNY songs. I suggest this because there is less of a sense, with these songs, that one must be absolutely 'realistic' or 'honest' in one's presentation of the emotions. You can ham up funny more easily - with less subtlety to worry about - than you can serious.
