You may want to look at the bass solos from Mendelssohn's ELIJAH - there are several of them - my favourites are "Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel" and "For the mountains shall depart".
Another possibility might be the aria "The people that walketh in darkness" from part I of Handel's MESSIAH.
Since you're a choral singer, I'm going to presume that you may be comfortable singing in Latin, even though you're not comfortable with other foreign languages. If this is true, you might also look at the aria "Quia fecit mihi magna" from Bach's MAGNIFICAT IN D (BWV 243).
