Perhaps, but to call the Times a "rag" is hardly cricket old boy. :)
The British do tend to be a little scathing if they feel the price of the ticket does not match the quality of the performance.
My first singing teacher was of the British school and he wrote de-moralizing reviews in a small town of about 80,000 people. His personality was indeed self-centred and quite often his reviews angered the people who attended the concert but he was not swayed by the unwritten pledge to support the box-office as many of the US reviewers are.
