melinda,
it seems that he has trouble once he goes out of the range of speech. there is no reason for any male singer not to be able to physically reproduce a nice, strong middle C so, i suspect that he is only comfortable when singing in the range he is accustomed to using through speaking. a lot of young males get the feeling that their voice is starting to become seperate from their bodies as they get out of the speech range so, they feel as if they lose physical control of the sound. of course, the sound is never physically connected to them but, they still operate under the delusion that it is. if he is a bit timid and uncertain, he is likely to take his hands off the steering wheel when this happens rather than gripping for dear life, the usual reaction of the more brazen.
you could see what happens to him when you reduce the 'out of body' sensation. singing into a pillow is a good way to do that. he won't hear himself as much and it tends to reduce the sense that the sound is moving around. if he sings in tune while singing into a pillow, in that critical area, then you know his problem is a reaction to what he hears or feels while singing and not an initiation problem.
