Yeah, the difference is I LIKE the early Streisand and I think the later Streisand sings underpowered schlock. (Anyone think I have strong opinions on this subject?) If you listen to her retrospective collection of 60s-80s literature, in the 60s, she did a nightclub act in which she sang "Who's afraid of the big, bad wolf?" and popped out a glorious high B-flat. Not in chest. And it doesn't sound disconnected from the rest of her voice -- it comes out of a mix. A hard mix in the lower register, yes. But she knew what she was doing.
I can't think of any time from 1962 through the late 1980s when Streisand took a few years off. I think as the years went on she got some bad advice about repertoire (worst thing she ever did was meet Barry Gibb!), and started singing with a more precious quality. But the voice was SUBLIME in her youth. She and Julie Andrews were my first inspirations.
