Dear Karen and List,
This post raises an interesting issue which I think merits discussion. I've noticed a certain amount of cliquishness in every city I've ever lived in, seeing the same performers over and over, which makes it extremely frustrating for newcomers. I spent several years in the New Orleans community theater scene, which I was able to break into only because I had a close friend who recommended me to a director.
My question has always been, where does this come from? Is it just a matter of, "We know so-and-so, she's pretty reliable"? Is the crow you know inherently preferable to the nightingale you don't? If so, why hold auditions in the first place?
I'd be very interested to hear how other list members have overcome this phenomenon.
