My first response is, take a look at tenor arias from operas by Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini (i.e., Bel Canto composers) - also look at the extensive song repertoire by these three composers; from operas by Gluck, Rameau, Thomas Arne, Purcell, and Monteverdi; from operas and oratorios by Handel; from masses, oratorios, and cantatas by Bach; also operettas by Lehar, Kalman, Herbert, and Sullivan; songs/cycles by Schubert, Britten (e.g., Holy Sonnets of John Donne; Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo), Brahms, Shostakovich, etc.
