Yes, "bowed vocal cords" mean that the cords begin to take the shape of a bow and there is lots of leaking of breath through the cords. This causes irritation and hoarseness. The solution is the tongue out of the mouth i.e. vocalizes on "è" as in "bella" with the tongue out of the mouth. This forces the vocal cords to gently approximate. It has been my experience that this exercise works remarkably well with "bowed vocal cords" singers either through vocal misbehaviour (such as operatic or broadway belting) or smoking.

Has anyone ever heard of a condition called 'bent vocal cord'? A friend of mine was recently told by a doctor that he has this condition. Apparently it means that one side of the vocal cords does not close properly. The symptom is that when he talks his voice cracks in normal speech.
The condition came on several months ago, perhaps because of a virus that affected his vocal cords.
A speech therapist recommended that he make the sound 'ah' several times an hour throughout the day, and to softly make the sound of a cat 'meow', also several times throughout the day.
Thanks very much.
