Subject:  cues, etc, was: why are operas underrehearsed?

I was in an opera here last spring in which the composer rehearsed us with
piano. When it got onto the stage the fuller score (still only piano,
synthesiser and percussion) utterly confused me with its sonorities.
Because the music was in a fairly unique idiom it was difficult to
establish good upbeats for cues. I confess my solution was to go my merry
way and let the conductor sort it out! That seemed to work :o) john
