susi,
i like your point about levels of teaching. of the four most influential
teachers in my life, none of them are voice teachers. when i took music
theory and composition in high school, i had an idea where most of the notes
were on the treble clef and i could play a little guitar. at the end of that
first year, the school orchestra played a twelve-tone composition i had
written and orchestrated under his watchful eye. i was not an exceptional
composition student. and there were fifteen, or so, other student
compositions on that program. everything i have done in music has been based
on the solid foundation the late henry lasker gave to me through his teaching
and i will always be grateful to him.
