THANK YOU. That "breathy" singing trend has annoyed me ever since it began. Like you said, it really distracts from the richness of the sound and its just not dynamic. A singer using "breathy" tones like that just blends in with the music. So what should be a marriage between singer and instrument becomes more of an evelopment of the singer.
Now as far as vocalists, like Mariah, embelishing too much: IMHO vocal embellishing is the heart & soul of R & B singing (and jazz & gospel vocals for that matter). I appreciate and greatly respect the talent and creativity it takes for that type of vocal manipulation. And though I'm not a Mariah fan, she is fantastic at manipulating her voice. However, I do agree that some R & B singers tend to over-sing material in that the song becomes more about vocal gymnastics and less about the meaning of the song.
