In a San Francisco Opera production I saw a few seasons ago Tracy Dahl's Olympia was rigid and mechanical when Hoffmann took the rose glasses off and totally lifelike when the glasses were on. The lifelike moods were brilliantly set off by the lighting and they coincided with the more lyrical passages in the aria.
