I have an article that was given to me by a personal trainer to the stars (Milwaukee Bucks, in this case - woo-hoo!) that advocates holding the breath and grunting while lifting weights. It was called the ... wish I could find it ... Vaclava method (or something like that) and is the same process involved in bowel movements. The sub-glottal pressure alone frightens the heck out of me and of course, my students all say, "Ewwwwww" when I mention the relationship to BMs. This article and this guy were firmly convinced that this was the way to go - I think it's important to be aware that some people advocate this method, especially since many of our high school students may be involved in track and field (shot put), weight training, etc.
