I had a teacher who had gone to Berklee in order to study pop singing. She said it was a big mess. Singers were hired not for their technical qualities, but for their performance success. Then, teachers would teach you what they thought they were supposed to ( opera-based singing ), while they would do different things on the stage.
She said she interviewed many of them about belting. AS most of them were black people who belted in church, they always answered the same thing: "Belting is a God-given talent. You're either blessed or you're not. There's no technique for that."
