Dear list,

Speaking of awareness - I was trying to get a sixteen-year-old become more
aware of her support, helping her find some energy and expansion in her
body. I had her put one wide open hand on her epigastric area, and one thumb
on her navel, letting the fingers touch her lower belly. She became horribly
embarrassed. She tried to hide the fact, but she didn't even touch her
belly, just held her thumb on her navel, pretty much "dying" as she
vocalised. I made a BIG mistake with her. How was I to know that her body
was not "her own?" Can I teach breathing concepts to someone who is so far
removed from their own instrument? I guess I come from a touchy-feely
background, and she doesn't. Any insights? It sort of feels like a form of
violation!!

This also brings up teaching/learning styles. She says "I don't know" to a
lot of questions on how it feels, or sounds, or how she would describe her
sound. Help! She's learning, but how? Imitation?
