Subject:  How do you "hear" yourself?

Hi,
I was wondering, does anyone know how to "hear" yourself when you sing, so
you know exactly what you sound like? I'm guessing recording on a tape player
isn't a very good reference and I heard you should plug ONE ear and sing,
but don't know if that's true. Because, you might think you sound one way,
and sound COMPLETELY different for "real" and "in real life". Someone I kow
used to think they had this amazing voice, and when they sung, they heard to
themself an awesome voice, but in reality she didin't. Sooooooo......
is there any way you can know what you sound like? Does anyone even KNOW what
I'm talking about?
Danielle
