I teach the middle school age girls also and I use the Britney,
Christina, Mandy, Jessica karaoke as a sort of bribe. They must work on
the easier and more healthful, IMO, folk songs also. The warm-ups and
folk songs is where they feel and hear the progress. Some of them have
difficulty finding the melody in the karaoke CDs, and if the
arrangements are a bit different, they really complain. You are very
brave tackling a group of preteens. It is important for them to learn
all their musical skills as long as it is balanced with a "bribe." I
emphasize that my concern is that they sing in a manner that is not
harmful to the voice and that I want them to sing as themselves, and
better than the stars do it(hopefully) I do keep it upbeat and positive. Anne
