Subject:  Teaching Young Girls

Hi, Group -

I have a question: I have recently begun teaching a group of four
girls, ages 9 - 12, in a class setting. My original idea was to do a
lot of work on sight singing, learning basic musical concepts,
exercises, both vocal and acting (drama stuff), and working on simple
literature, like folk songs, in order to work on the basic vocal
concepts, like scales, breathing, etc.

After our fifth session last night, I lost complete control
(giggling, silliness, goofy faces), and found out what they really
expected/want: to be little Britneys or Christinas (Not that there's
anything wrong with that....).

Have any of you worked with girls this age? I wouldn't normally even
teach girls this young, but thought if it was structured in a class
setting, and we covered basic concepts, it would be good format. Now
I'm contemplating karaoke Britney.... Any suggestions for keeping
girls this age interested? Or motivating them to learn the basics
before showing their midriffs and hopping all over the stage? Just
wondering.....

Sarah
