To avoid "covering" I always "aim" my sound at my upper teeth,
particularly when singing "a" and "o", which are the vowels that tend to
want to slip back under the soft palate if I let them. I also concentrate
on keeping my placement consistent, regardless of which register I'm
singing in. Keeping the sound "aimed" at the hard palate and upper teeth,
I find, also helps a lot to smooth out the lower passagio.
