according to meribeth bunch (page 64 of 'dynamics of the singing voice', 3rd ed.), the lateral crico-arytenoid muscles cause adduction of the vocal folds. her illustrations clearly indicate how these muscles are connected to the cricoid cartilege. what they don't show is how the muscles are connected to the arytenoid cartilege. (i can only picture them being connected, up from under, to the inside of the arytenoid cartileges if they are to cause adduction.) how does the contraction of these muscles move the arytenoid cartileges and how does that movement cause adduction? also, how is adduction distinct from closing of the glottis, which miller attributes to the action of the transverse arytenoid muscles?
