Dear Vocalisters:

Just to add a much greater confusing element to this discussion of
open and closed forms of the Italian vowels, is the requirement to
adjust vowels such that they will better match the pitch being sung.

One cannot sing a closed form of a vowel on all pitchs. One cannot,
as well, sing an open form of a vowel on all pitchs. Some pitches
require the open form and some pitches the closed form of the vowel
if the tone quality is to be maximized. All great singers do this,
whether consciously or unconsciously, to obtain their maximum tone
quality and resonance.

Perhaps this tonal requirement and the vowel changes it entails
contributes significantly to the confusion about which form of the
Italian vowel is the correct one.
