Subject:  real, or just excuses? was:singing and health

it has been my experience over the last twenty-five years that there
seem to be two seperate groups of singers in regard to health. there are
those who sing well, are realistic about their talent and who eat and
exercise as if they have some control over the quality of their general well
being. i have rarely heard this group of people complain or make excuses
for their short comings as singers.

the other group seems to be constantly complaining about some ailment or
other, and speaks of 'bad vocal days' as if they were some plague that had
beset itself upon them. i never ever hear them complaining about not
singing well as the result of a flaw in their abilities, prefering to blame
some external spectre of misfortune. i have never heard them say someone
else got the role because that person is a better singer, prefering to blame
the 'political' atmosphere of the organization involved.

i have heard complaints of the arts being pushed aside in favor of
sports. but there is a very important lesson to be learned from sports that
the arts do not teach- no matter how good you are, if you don't win, you must
find a better way.
