Subject:  Re: [vocalist] singing and health (and weight)

Dear Claudia and co vocalisters,

my knowledge about this subject is - as I already pointed out - quite limited,
and also quite biased by my personal interest. I certainly don't know the exact
effects of losing weight on the oestrogen level (except in cases of anorexia),
and neither does my med.dr.-friend, whom I consulted in this matter. I can
remember though, that there have been some postings from women on this list on
the subject on the effect of ageing and the menopause on the voice.

But to continue my wild speculations - without the extra handicap of any
knowledge - it would be interesting to know, whether there are singers on this
list, who have experience with medication to keep their oestrogen level more
constant during the menopause. The use of extra oestrogen during menopause
seems to get quite popular these days in several countries.

Despite all that, I would discuss these issues with your gynaecologist in the
first place.

One last unprofessional advice: in my opinion the most important thing is not
to worry. In my limited experience, my mind has always had a much bigger
influence on my voice than anything else, except for a real terrible cold. So
being afraid of losing your high notes, might very well work as a self
fulfilling prophecy, if you allow your fears to become big enough.

Best greetings,

Dré
