Wow!!! I really had no idea! The only Baroque sculptures I was familiar with were in the Igrejas Sao Francisco and Terceiro ordem de Sao Francisco in Bahia. I had no idea of these Masonic connections to anything Brazilian. I'm quite amazed. I'm not surprised, however, that Brazil had a prominent Baroque sculptor. I wish I had seen more historic art. Tiradentes, of course I learned about, but it was the bizarreness of his name (pull teeth, now really!!!???) that made him stick in my mind.
This isn't as off topic as one might at first think. Don't you think it's fertile ground for an operatic libretto?
