I personally found Pilates to be difficult for me to coordinate, breath-wise. My Pilates instructor explained the proper breathing as involving allowing the sternum and the lower ribs to collapse completely. I have spent so much time working on the expansion of the lower ribcage and a high (although not excessively so) sternum that I really couldn't let it go. The result was that, despite my best efforts to make the switchover, I was doing the exercises with the breathing I'm used to, and I would suffer terribly from lower back pain for days after my once-weekly class. So I dropped.
