Chris Thomas wrote in reponse to Molly McClinden's inquiry about the opera "The Crucible":
<<I think it's a WONDERFUL opera and I would love to play that role myself. I saw it in a production with a company called Opera Americana in Alexandria, VA in the early 90s and I was just bowled over by it. (Peggy, is that company sitll in existence?) >>
I can't say that Opera Americana is out of existence, but they haven't done a production for several years. I suspect it's an issue of finances.
The Washington Opera did a production of The Crucible a couple of seasons back, and it is a powerful opera. I think that it's a good opera for a university production, because there are many small but significant roles, and I think the vocal demands even of the lead roles are reasonable, though I'm sure they are challenging musically.
If my memory is correct, Elizabeth Proctor is the wife of John Proctor, the woman who is accused of witchcraft by the woman who's had an adulterous relationship with John Proctor. Here's a web page with some more information about the opera: http://www.operaam.org/encore/crucible.htm
And I'm sure there's more info on the web you can find if you use your favorite search engine (I like www.google.com) - I searched on the search term: the crucible opera
