Subject:  Form and Analysis Questions

Hey,
do any theory buffs want to take a crack at any of
these questions??????

1. Differentiate form and genre in music

2. Why is historical perspective essential to
studying musical form?

3."Form in music is a shaping force, a lineal
offspring nourished by invention." Explain and
illustrate.

4.Liszt and Wagner extended the function of motives
from thematic varition to dramatic narrative. Explain
and illustrate.

5.Percy Goetchius methodized the structural grammer of
18th and 19th century music. Explain and illustrate.

6.Explain the following derivations in the evolution
of musical form

the thematically integrated ternary character
piece from binary dance form

the thematically conatasting ternary character
piece from alternative dance forms and da capo arias

Vienesse waltz form from the minuet and trio

the double period from the period

first and second endings from antecedent
/consequent groups

elision from metric syncopation

five part ternary from from incipient ternary (
now called rounded binary) form.

quadrille from contredanse

late 19th century military march from from
Baroque alternative dance forms

divertimento and serenade from the Baroque
instrumental suite

codas from cadential extensions

Bach's sublime partitas from the elegant dances
of the 17th century Frech court

pharase-period forms from couplets and quatrains
of traditional verse.

scherzo and trio from the alliance of courtly and
folk styles

extensions and transitions from and ways and
means of seduction--------- no joke

**************I can explain most of these. I just
can't come up with any examples to go with them. Any
suggestions or explanations would be greatly
appreciated!!!!

Thanks,
Trevor- the frustrated form student
