You can take some of the stress off your neck by doing the same exercise with hands behind head, elbows out, neck straight, lift shoulders toward ceiling.

Straight-legged leg lifts can be very hard on the back. Be sure to keep your lower back pressing into the floor. You might also try leg lifts with your hands under you rear end to help keep your pelvis tilted and your back from arching.
Once you start seeing results, exercise is much more fun!
