/i/ is a high vowel (the phonetic term to describe tongue postion). The
position of the tonge plays a big part in positioning the formants so that we
hear /i/ instead of something else. To attempt to sing /i/ without the
elevation of the tongue would be misguided and almost impossible. Now, if
there is tension involved in this, that's a different story but you'll still
need the tongue raised to create the desired phoneme.
