you could try the 'duh' exercise. you could have him sing arpeggios on
'duh' (just like he is an idiot). on the high stuff, he can modulate to
'dope' as in homer simpson. they key thing with this exercise is to make
sure you tell him he is supposed to sound dumb not good. the problem with
most technical errors, i have found, is that the student assumes that the
teacher's suggestion will make them sound good (at least to them). as we
know, what usually sounds good to everyone else, especially in the high
range, usually sounds like crap to the singer (if it sounded good, everyone
would just try to sound good and i'd have to get a job). make sure you tape
him doing this. it will sound stupid until he gets to the notes where his
larynx usually rides up. the next step is to normalize the parts that DO
sound stupid. let me know.
