it is possible to achieve a 'blend' by arrangment of the singers. the
most maleable voice goes in the middle, the showiest voice goes next to that
one, on the inside. the voices with 'ping' go from there inward going from
mildly pingy to wicked pingy. on the other side, from middle to end, go the
softer focused voices to the voices that aren't focused at all. it also
takes care of those weird tuning problems that people have when they stand
next to someone whose voice is really different from theirs.

i don't know why this works and i don't remember who i got it from (i
think it was one of the contributors to howard swan's 'choral conducting; a
symposium').
