Perhaps you could mention this to your teacher, and he/she will know to give beginners a little better preparation in the future. However, I can't think that one would really expect a vocal competition to be like a Sunday morning congregation> The latter is always great for our ego and self-esteem, but the former is necessary for our growth and improvement.
