As far as I know, the only rule in most NATS auditions is that a teacher is not allowed to judge or play for his own student. In most situations, we are lucky to find enough judges to cover the categories, so it becomes impossible to worry about whether a judge might know a student. In my experience, NATS auditions are among the fairest auditions, tho there certainly can be occa- sional problems. You are right that singing in these situations is great experience and preparation for the singing world, whether you win or lose. I tell my students I don't send them to win; I send them for the experience. If they happen to win, of course I am happy...icing on the cake! They best plan is simply to get up and entertain and try not to worry about who the judges are, what they are thinking, why they aren't smiling, etc. Just sing your heart out and enjoy yourself!
