Subject:  Phrase finish with Vibrarto?/Controlled Vibrato?

Ken,

Vennard had an interesting set of graphs that showed that a trill actually
rides on a wide pitch vibrato. The singer purposely introduces a *dynamic*
fluctuation with a cycle at half-length of the pitch. When properly
synchronized, you get the outer pitches emphasized. The psychoacoustics of
it is that you "hear" distinct pitches alternating at regular intervals.

Not sure if this is what you were after, but it can point you toward an
effective way to learn the trill. It is basically impossible to "speed up"
a trill from slow eighth notes. You have to kick into a higher gear at
some point. It might be worthwhile to start from a vibrato instead. Of
course, you need a pretty well-tuned instrument to start with to have an
even vibrato. It is possible to change the speed of vibrato somewhat, but
I think the conscious control methods are not necessarily healthy ones.
Not sure about this.
