Subject:  Re: [vocalist-temporary] High Larynx Position

randy and lloyd,

perhaps i should make myself clear. i maintain that, for someone who
has not learned to keep their larynx in a neutral position in an easy way
(which i feel the sls approach does, as i understand it), that it is far
easier (not neccesarily healthier) to let it go where it wants to.

male singers who attempt to keep their voices from 'cracking' have a
tendency to attempt to depress the larynx and build up pressure. of those
two choices, it is far easier to sing by just giving into the rising larynx
and the sound that goes with it. in other words, given the choice between
singing with an 'isn't my voice deep' setup as opposed to the jerry lewis
setup, the jerry lewis is easier and preferable (and the french love it).

personal note: i have found singing like jerry lewis to be almost
effortless. i have no sense that there is excessive build up of sub-glottal
pressure, quite the opposite in fact. there is even very little tension
invloved but, i think that this is due to the larynx being lifted by a
jutting forward of the jaw that 'repositions' the larynx rather than having
it lifted by muscle tension. the sound is not too different from the sound
produced by pop singers of senegal (is this just a by-product of french
imperialism?). but, i do prefer the sounds of a neutral larynx.
