sorry ken,
i don't have the tech to listen to your sample but, the technique you are describing is used with more obvious implimentation in other forms of music. when i teach this gimmick to my students, i teach it as a yell and release. in order to do this, you have to be able to sing with vibrato in the first place. if you can't, you need to find that first.
the trick is to stop the vibrato with a slight pressing of the breath and then to stop pressing. the pressing acts like a palm mute on a guitar. by taking off the mute, the string is free to vibrate again.
if you can sing with vibrato, you may want to experiment with doing the reverse first. start with vibrato and then reduce, slow or stop the vibrato to the level you'd like to start with and then reverse it again, starting with the vibrato reduction and then getting rid of it.
