Danielle-
Remember that every voice is different, so different voices develop at different times. Some lighter voices can be fully mature in their mid-20's, some heavier voices not until 40.
I can't quite explain the difference between studying as a child and as an adult, but I do know that after 16 years of voice lessons, I understand my voice in a COMPLETELY different way at the age of 30 than I did at the age of 14. Certainly, the voice has matured, but my *mental* and *emotional* understanding of what is happening has also changed, and I don't believe there is a scientific measurement for that. For me singing is 90% emotional, so this accounts for a great difference.
My 2 cents.
