Subject:  The "legit" sound

Dear fellow Vocalisters,

I'm having a terminology problem, for English is not my native language.
What exactly is singing with a "legit" sound? I hear the term a lot in
conjunction with Musical Theatre, which unfortunately I didn't grow up with
either but I sure am learning to enjoy. Does it refer in any way to belting?
That's the impression I've been getting.

Thanks for any input on this,
Rocio Guitard
